Beginning in March 2025, the playgrounds at Bartlett Park, 917 S. Bartlett Road, and Berkley Park, 315 Berkley Place, will be removed by our contractor. Both playgrounds are over 30 years old. As the typical playground should last 15 years, the useful life of both playgrounds has been exceeded and they are no longer safe to maintain.
The Streamwood Park District’s 2023 Strategic Plan formally identified the need to reduce the number of District-owned playgrounds. When determining removals, the Park District looks at numerous factors, including the proximity of other playgrounds, the age and safety of the playground equipment, park accessibility, usage, drainage, and terrain. It is very important to note that removing a playground is not removing a park. If we remove a playground, it does not mean that park can never have a playground again. It does mean that, at least in the short term, the Park District cannot continue to safely maintain or replace a playground at that particular location. Removing the playground and restoring grass space allows the Park District time to evaluate that park’s needs, without the liability concern of maintaining an older playground.
The old playground locations in Bartlett Park and Berkley Park will be filled with topsoil, seed and blanket to be turned into turfgrass space. Only the playgrounds will be removed. Amenities like the basketball courts and paths in the parks will remain in place.
